This is a World War I to WWII era windproof trench lighter. It was produced by the Bowers Manufacturing Company of Kalamazoo, Michigan. It has the Bowers engraved shield and flame on the side, and Kalamazoo, Mich. on the flint wheel stem. You push it down and slid the small cover over, so the wick in and the flint are in a wind protected chamber, that also shades the flame from view. It has a black gun metal finish, mostly still intact. There is a little piece of flint left, so it still sparks, but would need a new piece of flint if you were to use it. This was a well-used piece, and the little lid has been abraded by the flint wheel on one side, which you sometimes see on this piece from the user spinning the flint striker with the cover still in place.
