Vintage and Antique thimbles are very collectible, especially thimbles made of silver and gold, or those with unusual designs or advertizing. Important Amreican thimble makers include Waite-Thresher of Providence(thimble in a star inside, star at apex outside), Stern Bros. (generally a S and anchor on the outside, Simons Bros. Co. (S in a shield inside), and Webster Company of Attleboro, Mass, which made many souvenir thimbles. Some thimbles have a semi-precious stone at the top. Topless thimbles are referred to as tailor's thimbles. Most silver thimbles were constructed with rims at their base after 1890, so rimless thimbles can usually be dated as earlier.
