The Penta J is a 35 mm SLR camera made by Yashica from 1961 to 1964, and the first of a line of cameras that became known as the Yashica J series. The serial number on this camera (1215111) suggests it was made in February 1961 according to the first two number coding system used by Yashica at the time. This camera and lens mount is different than the Yashica J rangefinder. It features an M42 screw lens mount. It had a standard lens 50mm f/2 Auto Yashinon, and Yashica light meter attached to the strap are being sold separately (while supply lasts). The camera has a focal-plane shutter with cloth curtains, with shutter speeds from 1/2 to 1/500 second, plus bulb mode. It has a flash PC socket for X and FP flash synchronization at 1/60 second. As shown, the shutter release is on the front of the body. The focusing screen has microprism and split-prism rangefinder type focusing aids. The bottom has a standard quarter-inch tripod socket and a film type reminder dial.

This example was well used, but still in good condition. The strap had been tied in a not to create a short lease. There is a little corrosion and loss of felt on the inside of the back near the hinge. The mirror inside has a rough bottom edge. Despite the wear and tear, all key features, shutter speed, curtain, and mirror are operational.
