This is an old metal license plate topper from the Tydol Oil Company. It measures about 4 1/2 by 6 3/4 inches, and dates from the 1930s to early 1940s. It was used and has the crease on the base, rust, and grime. It's an old, hard to find original, not a reproduction.

License plate toppers were usually made of metal and attached to the top or the bottom of the license plate frame to advertise products, places, events, and affiliations. They existed since the early 1900s , and one of the earliest was a logo of two wheels with the letters AAA, indicating the owner was a member of the American Automobile Association. Their use preceded bumper stickers, which first appeared on cars after World War II.
