This is a well-made and attractive ruby stained antique Early American Pattern Glass covered sugar bowl, probably manufactured by either the Pioneer Glass or Thompson Glass Company. It is a block pattern a round toothed edge. It probably dates to the late Victorian era (1890s) to probably no later than 1920. Sugars were large at this time because refined sugar was not widespread, and a sugar bowl like this would hold a block of sugar which would be shaved into smaller containers or recipes.

It was used but has no wear or damage, and all the teeth on the top are intact and have no chips. It does have some stray ruby flashing spayed om the base, and on one of the blocks, there is a tiny nick which you can see in the magnified image. It has the normal mold seam edges on the base and on the lid. When you look on the underside of the lid you can see a couple of air bubbles (see enlargement).

A piece like this could also be used as a candy jar. Although there are a few tiny scuffs and wear to the ruby flash, this piece probably spent years in a china cabinet unused, and overall it grades between VG and NM. It stands about 7 3/4 inches tall.
