The Sunpak Auto 144D was a late 1990 universal thyristor flash designed to work with vintage Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Pentax, Minolta, Maxxum, Ricoh and Chinon film cameras. It aims straight and two bounce angles. It weighs about 6ounces, and the switch has three position settings (off and two distance ranges), with additional switches for ISO, and camera model. It takes 4 AA alkaline batteries, and the battery compartment lid opens by pressing down while sliding then up. While this product was made for film cameras, its 6.16 trigger voltage is reported to be safe for EOS digital cameras according to various websites, but digital camera users should always do their own research whether an older flash will work with their modern camera.
This example comes with the original, but somewhat damaged box. It has a Lechmere price tag of $49.99. This New England electronics store chain went out of business in 1997. The flash looks hardly used, but it was stored with batteries, which leaked. One of the contacts inside the battery compartment was corroded, but we cleaned the contact and tested with new batteries, and the flash triggered on the test button.
