Close-grained native hardwoods (boxwood, beech, walnut, and sycamore) were favored, with exotic woods or materials sometimes used, especially for inlay. Long used large wooden bowls and finely crafted jewelry and trinket boxes are popular treen collectibles.

Treen
Treen is a term for small handmade household objects made of wood, and includes a wide range of objects including bowls, trinket and snuff boxes, and even tools. Treen is a form of folk art, and was a more common form of home craft before the advent of the cheap manufacture of metal and plastic items for common household items. In the first half of the 20th century, treen was a common cottage industry in the production of local keepsakes for tourists, and today some artists make fine products of hand carved and turned wood.
