This is a pleasing oil on board still life of a vase of flowers. It is signed with what appears to read M.C. Labbee, but the signature is difficult to discern. The painted wooden frame has a simple aesthetic design. The outer frame dimensions are 12.5 x16.5 inches (30 x 41 cm), and the board dimensions are estimated at 10.25 x14.25 inches (26 x 36 cm). A steel wire is strung between two sturdy ring hooks. p>
The reverse has the original paper protection (with some tape, and a label that reads "John W. Auty / Art and Gift Shop / 104 Westminster Street. Providence, R.I." Auty was a Providence photographer, who first had a photo supply shop, then later an art, gift and picture framing shop, probably during the 1920s and early 1930s based on information online. The painting probably dates to that time. The painter may have been a good local artist, but more research is needed.
The painting background is dark and mellow, drawing attention to the bolder floral colors. The flash in the closure up pictures brings out the colors of the flowers. In real life the colors are more muted. Overall will find this a pleasing piece to own.
