This is a sterling silver (925) salt cellar with a cobalt glass insert and matching spoon. It has the British hallmarks for Birmingham, England (anchor), sterling (passant lion), and 1946 (W in shield, although the W on the cellar is either mostly worn off or was lightly stamped. The makers mark SLD is for William Suckling Limited. The base is marked Made in England and has a faint serial number inscribed. Both the spoon and salt are monogrammed KLC. The salt is 2 1/4 inches wide, 1 9/16 deep, and 1 1/16 inches tall. The base and the spoon together weigh 34 grams without the glass insert, which is a tad over a troy ounce actual silver weight. This piece was well used, and both the spoon and cellar have dark tarnish spots or regions, and you can find a couple tiny dings, but overall, the set is in good shape and not damaged. l
This design exactly matches a salt cellar with Birmingham hallmarks sold by Tiffany & Company during the 1960s and Suckling Ltd was likely their supplier.
