Blue Onion is a very old pattern first produced by Meissen in the 18th century, and modeled after a much earlier Chinese design featuring stylized peonies and asters along with Japanese peaches and pomegranates (the so-called bulb or onion) around a bamboo stalk. Other companies imitated and modified the pattern, and it remains one of the most popular blue and white patterns in china. Besides Meissen, other notable 20th century makers of of the pattern are the Blue Danube Japan line by Lipper and Mann Importers (1951 and through the present), the similar Vienna Woods of Japan by Seymour Mann, Blue Onion by Churchill China of England, and the Royal Copenhagen variant known as Blue Fluted.
