Podmore, Walker & Co (marked PW & Co) operated in the town of Tunstall in Staffordshire, England between 1834 and 1856. One of its main lines was an earthenware or ironstone dinnerware they called Pearl Stone Ware that had applied transfer patterns and motifs. This transferware was made by applying a printed decorative paper stencil to white-glazed blanks. This early transferware with blue designs is called Flow Blue because the blue glaze blurred or "flowed" during firing. Other colors were used that also flowed. The most common PW & Co transferware pattern was Washington, but other popular patterns included Venus, Temple, and Corean.
This black transferware side dish is in the Corean pattern. It has an uncommon size of 6 3/4 inches. This example is marked with both the "Pearl Stone Ware PW & Co" imprint, and the inked winged cartouche mark, with the Corean design name. Both these marks were in use in use from 1834 to 1856. The dish has no cracks or chips, but it is heavily crazed, with discoloration under the glaze. There is also an imperfection in the glaze in the center of the plate. There are also three evenly spaced bumps on the rim probably from a triangular-shaped spacer used during firing. Despite the aged look, the plate displays well.
