Liberty Blue was a Staffordshire Ironstone china dinnerware made in England by the Enoch Wedgwood company between 1973 and 1976 as a promotional item for supermarkets and department stores for the bicentennial celebration of America's Declaration of Independence from England. Each of the pieces in the set has different historical scenes related to the formation of United States and the Revolutionary War. Because of the attractive antique-look design, limited time of production, and the limited numbers of certain pieces in the set, they have become a popular collectible. There are slight differences in color in the blue design and over glaze between the early and late production pieces. When issued, these were high production modestly priced sets, especially for the core boxed 5-piece set (dinner plate, bread and butter, salad plate, tea cup and saucer) which were a loss leader, so these pieces are relatively common today. Other pieces were sold at higher prices, so less were made and sold, and these other pieces command much higher prices today.
