This is a Commonwealth of the Bahamas Islands nine-coin proof set dated 1971 produced by the Franklin Mint, with an accompanying case. While the Franklin Mint, a private company, is primarily known for producing coins and medals for the collectibles market, in the 1970s and 1980s, the Franklin Mint also produced legal-tender coins for Panama and a number of island countries, including the Bahamas. The set was sealed between two sheets of plastic, but the top plastic was pealed apart long ago. Moreover, the coins and case were not stored in good environmental conditions, the fabric of the case has foxing , and the five-dollar and two-dollar pieces have a slight haze on the exposed face, and maybe a finger smudge, and the five and two both have a rim black tarnish spot. In any case, all the coins are still collectible, but the value of the lot will largely be the silver content. Four of the coins in the set are made of solid sterling silver (0.925), and according to the Kraus Coin catalog, the calculated actual silver weight (ASW) in troy ounces for each of the coins are: five dollars, 1.2527; two dollars, 0.8863; one dollar, 0.4566; and fifty cents 0.2667; or 2.86 troy ounces actual silver weight. Free Shipping. No paperwork. US penny shown for scale.
