This is a bisque porcelain Penny Doll. It was probably made in Japan or Germany during the 1920s or 1930s. Their names derive from the fact that they could be bought in shops for a penny. Penny dolls are sometimes confused with Frozen Charlottes, which are not clothed or painted with bright colors, and typically date from 1850 to 1920, and can be up to 18 inches tall. Penny dolls are generally small, and were used in dollhouses or for play. They are cold painted, not fire glazed, so the paint can wear off. Value is more based on details like pose, outfits, and coloring. They were often sold in theme sets. This is example looks to be a boy with hands on his waist, wearing a red hat.
