World Postage Stamps

The first adhesive postage stamp was put on sale on May 1, 1840, by the British Treasury. It had a value of one penny and featured the head of Queen Victoria, and was printed in black. This stamp is widely known today as the Penny Black. The next jurisdiction to issue an adhesive stamp was the Canton of Zurich in Switzerland on March 1, 1843. In August 1843, Brazil was the third to issue adhesive stamps, generally called the Bull's Eye stamp because of its design. The first United States official postage stamp was issued in 1847, with 5 and 10 cent stamps depicting Benjamin Franklin and George Washington. By the 1860's most countries had adopted adhesive postage stamps.
