This is a clear glass antique Sanford's Ink bottle. The base is embossed SANFORD'S, a faint sideways S and 8, and the number 89 in the center. It is conical or almost bell shaped and probably dates to the late 1880s or early 1990s. It has a fire polished sheared top, and its design is intermediate with earlier conical inks and the "ring shoulder cone inks" that became the widespread by the 1890s. By the 1890s, most American made inks had a mold form lip, and by 1910, most ink bottle had screw mouths. The bottle has faint mold seams to the shoulder, sheared top, with a twisted glass neck, was fire polished, but is still irregular, with a small as-made fracture stained by ink. While the 89 is likely just a mold mark, the numbers on Sanford bottles are often taken as dates, and the design of this bottle is consistent with a bottle made in 1889. This ink bottle is in excellent condition, with no cracks or chips (other than the as made sheared and fired mouth), but as shown in some photos, there is a thin line of residue on the inside below the shoulder.
