This is a lot of Apache Tears in their rough, unpolished form. Apache tear is the popular name for natural rounded obsidian, which is a black or dark-colored natural volcanic glass. They are popular stone for tumbling and polishing, and even raw samples like some of the smaller ones here are used in wire wrap jewelry.

These specimens were from the estate of mineral collector lapidarist, and were collected sometime in the 1970s or 1980s, probably in Arizona. Each lot varies, but you will get a minimum of 10 apache tears, with typically 3 or 4 larger ones (up to 1 1/2 or 4.5 cm), and 6 or 7 smaller ones (down to marble or pea size). Each lot of will weigh a minimum of 5.5 ounces (155 grams), with some bags a little greater in weight. The photos show representative lots. They are as found in an old tin, and their appearance can be improved somewhat with some washing with a stiff bristle brush.
